Red Wine Nutrition Facts
Resveratrol — Important Nuance
Resveratrol became famous after research showed it activated SIRT1 (longevity gene) and had cardiovascular benefits in cell and animal studies. However, a typical 150ml glass of red wine contains only 0.3-1.0mg of resveratrol. The positive studies used doses of 100-1,000mg — meaning you would need to drink 100-1,000 glasses to obtain research-relevant doses. The Mediterranean diet's cardiovascular benefits are attributable to olive oil, vegetables, legumes, and fish — not specifically wine.
Polyphenols — Genuine Benefits?
Red wine's broader polyphenol content (quercetin, tannins, anthocyanins) has real antioxidant properties. Observational studies consistently show moderate red wine drinkers have lower cardiovascular disease rates than abstainers. However, this association is heavily confounded by healthier lifestyle factors correlated with moderate wine drinking in Western societies. Randomised controlled trials of wine consumption do not consistently show cardiovascular benefits.
Alcohol and Cancer — No Safe Level
The IARC classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen (highest category). Alcohol consumption increases risk of breast, colorectal, oesophageal, liver, and oral cancers. Cancer risk increases linearly from zero — there is no J-curve benefit for cancer, unlike the cardiovascular risk association. For cancer prevention, any amount of wine (red or white) is associated with incrementally higher risk.
Calorie Density and Weight
Red wine is calorically dense for a liquid — 85 kcal/100ml. A bottle (750ml) contains 638 calories — comparable to a full meal. In social settings, wine consumption is often accompanied by food and multiple pours, making calorie tracking difficult. For people managing weight, wine's calorie contribution should be explicitly accounted for in daily tracking.
